Port Highlights
Ft. Lauderdale — Fort Lauderdale sits in the middle of the burgeoning megalopolis of South Florida, which hugs the Atlantic coast from Miami in the south (a 35-minute car ride away) to Palm Beach in the north. In the city limits alone, there are more than 165 miles of navigable waterways, and more than 42,000 registered yachts. Downtown Fort Lauderdale is peppered with high-rise buildings, sidewalk cafes, bars and shops, creating the perfect location for people-watching!
Princess Cays — Princess Cays is located about 30 miles from Nassau, at the southern portion of Eleuthera Island. Two miles wide, this picturesque island retreat is a great escape for snorkeling and diving with its beautiful coral reef with schools of tropical fish surrounding the island. Swaying mangrove trees surround the spectacular white sand beaches. There are plenty of cushioned lounge chairs, beach umbrellas, tiki huts and hammocks strung in shaded areas in which to relax.
San Juan — Puerto Rico's first inhabitants were the Taino Indians, who encountered Columbus in 1493. The Spanish quickly settled, defending their territory against the Dutch and British. This is evident by the imposing fortresses of Old San Juan, namely the El Morro Castle, dominating the old section of this capital city. In 1897, Spain declared Puerto Rico an autonomous state. Spain later ceded Puerto Rico to the U.S. and residents were granted American citizenship in 1917.
St. John's — When Columbus discovered Antigua in 1493, he encountered the unfriendly Carib Indians. Columbus named the island Santa Maria de Antigua, in honor of a church in Spain. For many years, both the Spanish and French were unable to settle on the island due to the fierce nature of the Caribs. But in 1632, the British took control of this island, developing the sugarcane industry with the use of slaves imported from Africa. In 1981 Antigua was granted independence and became a British commonwealth.
Philipsburg — St. Maarten is the smallest piece of land shared by two sovereign states. Legend has it that the Dutch and French boundaries of the island were determined by two men who challenged one another in a race around the island, with the Frenchman walking faster and claiming more land. Legend or not, both the Dutch and French settled here in the 1630s and despite occupancy by the British twice, the Dutch and French have lived peacefully together ever since they arrived.
Gustavia - The Swedish heritage of St. Barts is felt in the capital of Gustavia. The first colonists were the French, who arrived in 1645, but later sold the land to the Knights of Malta. France bought the island back from Sweden in 1878, and today it is considered part of the Dependency of Guadeloupe, an Overseas Department of France. St. Barts has long been considered a playground of the rich and famous and is known for its beaches, gourmet dining and designer shopping.
Tortola - Roadtown - Tortola is the largest and most populated island of the British Virgin Islands. Tortola is known for its Sage Mountain National Park, covered with lush, primeval rainforest. During colonial times, pirates sailed along the shoreline of these beautiful, idyllic islands in search of great treasures. Though the islands remain a British Dependency, the official currency was changed to the U.S. dollar and financial services are the main source of income to the island.
Grand Turk - Grand Turk is the capital of Turks & Caicos, and it has been a longtime favorite destination for divers eager to explore the 7,000-foot-deep pristine coral walls that drop down only 300 yards out to sea. On shore, the tiny island is home to white-sand beaches, the National Museum, and a few wild horses and donkeys, which leisurely meander past the white-walled courtyards, pretty churches, and bougainvillea-covered colonial inns on their daily commute into town.
